Capstan Cottage is just outside Whitby. It's one of a handful of houses on a small, quiet holiday development. The layout is upside down, which some people like. The three bedrooms and the bathroom are all on the ground floor. The living room and kitchen are upstairs.
The upstairs living area has a small balcony. You get a good view of the old railway viaduct from it. You can sometimes see the North York Moors steam train going past through the trees. It's a nice spot to sit.
The place sleeps six. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's clean and comfortable, not luxury. There's one bathroom. Bedding is included, and we provide a cot and highchair if you need them.
On the development itself, there's plenty of grass, two small playgrounds for children, and picnic tables. They put gas barbecues out in the summer. You can walk down to the river. I've seen herons there, and the odd seal.
You're about 200 yards from the Cinder Track. It's the old railway line between Whitby and Scarborough, good for walking or cycling. It's about a 20 minute walk from the cottage across the viaduct into the centre of Whitby. It's a proper fishing town with the abbey on the cliff. Good for fish and chips.
Robin Hood's Bay is about six miles south. It's all narrow streets and rock pools. Sandsend is the other way, west along the beach from Whitby.
If you're driving, the North York Moors National Park is right there. You can get to places like Goathland, which was in Heartbeat, or the market town of Pickering within half an hour. The steam railway runs between the two.
Facilities: there's a washing machine, TV, wifi, and parking on site. There's a patio garden. No pets, sorry. There's a local pub about a mile away.
