Toll Bar Cottage is in Sandsend, near Whitby. It's a stone cottage right at the top of the village, facing the sea. It's detached, and yes, it was once an old toll house.
It sleeps six, in four bedrooms. There's a double with its own shower room on the ground floor, which is useful. Upstairs there are three more bedrooms: a double, a twin room, and a children's bunk room. There's also a family bathroom up there. We've just finished a full renovation, so everything from the kitchen to the sofas to the beds is new.
Outside there's a patio with an electric awning for shade, and a proper car park right on site with an electric vehicle charger.
The location is the main thing. You look straight out over the road to the golf course and the cliffs. The beach is a few minutes' walk downhill. At low tide, you can walk for miles on sand all the way to Whitby. The village itself has a couple of good seafood restaurants, cafes, a little shop, and a surf school.
It's a 3 Star place. That means it's comfortable, clean and well-equipped, not luxurious. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome. Up to four.
For things to do, you're right on the Cleveland Way for walking. Whitby is about two miles along the coast road. The North York Moors Railway runs from Whitby to Pickering. For a family day out, Scarborough and its Sea Life centre are about a half hour drive. Dalby Forest is similar, for cycling or the treetop walk. The local pub is about a mile away.
