South Haven

This is South Haven. It's our place in Whitby, up near the top end of town. It's a detached house in a quiet cul-de-sac, so you get a bit of peace but you're still in the middle of everything. The beach is a five minute walk down the hill.

It sleeps nine people, which is a lot, but it's only got three bedrooms. They're all good sized doubles, and two have an extra single bed in them as well. The reason it works is because there are three bathrooms. One's an ensuite, one's a family bathroom, and there's a downstairs shower room too. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable and clean and everything works.

You can park right outside the house on the driveway. There's a small enclosed garden out the back with a patio. It's a sun trap in the afternoon.

You really don't need the car once you're here. In about two minutes you're on Church Street, which is the main old cobbled street with all the shops and pubs. The best fish and chips places are down there too. The harbour is just a bit further. Sometimes the tall ships like the Bark Endeavour are in, which is good to see.

For walks, you can go straight up the 199 steps to the Abbey and the churchyard, or walk along the West Cliff. The Cleveland Way path starts here as well if you're feeling energetic. The North York Moors aren't far if you want to drive out for a proper hike, maybe to Goathland which is the 'Heartbeat' village.

The house has all the things you'd hope for: WiFi, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a cot and highchair if you need them. We don't allow pets, sorry.

Some useful links if you're planning: North York Moors National Park for walking maps, and English Heritage for Whitby Abbey.
