This is Hope Cottage. It's in Whitby town centre, on the west side of the river. It's about a two minute walk to the bridge. The cottage is part of the old ropery, so it's from around 1840. You get the feel of the old place, but it's been updated so everything works properly.
It sleeps five. Three bedrooms upstairs, one bathroom. It's got a four star rating, so it's comfortable and well-equipped. The garden is enclosed, which is good if you're bringing dogs. We let two dogs stay. There's parking for one car on the site.
You've got the wood burner for cooler evenings, and a BBQ in the garden. There's a washing machine and a dishwasher. Bedding and towels are included.
For location, you can't really beat it. There's a shop, pubs, and restaurants about a hundred yards away. The beach is about three hundred yards. You're right in it.
The famous 199 steps up to the church and the abbey are just up the street. The views from there are worth the climb. For a different view, the boat trips from the harbour are good. The open-top bus tour starts nearby too.
If you want to get out of town, Robin Hood's Bay is about fifteen minutes south by car. Staithes is about twenty minutes north. Both are old fishing villages with steep streets. The North York Moors National Park starts just outside town. The North York Moors National Park website has walking routes. The steam railway from Pickering to Whitby is about a thirty minute drive to the station at Grosmont.
