The Old Court House
The Old Court House is in the middle of Bowness on Windermere. It's about a five-minute walk down to the lake. The main thing is you can leave your car on the drive, which is private, and get to everything on foot.
It sleeps ten. Five bedrooms, six bathrooms, because every bedroom has its own en-suite. That's useful with a big group. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable and well-equipped, but not brand new.
The building used to be the police station and courthouse, built in the 1840s. It's a big, solid house. The rooms are a good size. The kitchen has a table and one of those old pulley clothes dryers. There's a living room with a fire, a separate dining room with a table for ten, and a little reading nook off it.
There's space for two, maybe three cars on the drive. Out front there's a picnic table on a small patio.
Being where it is, you've got all the shops, cafes, and restaurants of Bowness on your doorstep. The cinema is an old Art Deco one. The lake is right there for the boats. You can walk up Orrest Head from here for the view.
For days out, Ambleside and Lakeside are a short drive or you can get the boat. The Lake District National Park site has all the walking routes. National Trust Lake District lists the local properties and trails.
Facilities: it has all the basics like WiFi, washing machine, dishwasher. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring two dogs. There's a highchair if you need one.
