Oak Cottage
Oak Cottage is on our farm, about two miles outside Ambleside up the Kirkstone road. The views are good. You can see Ambleside and a fair bit of Windermere from the front. It's an old farmhouse, from the 1700s.
It sleeps four, in four bedrooms, but there's only one bathroom. The rating is 4 Star. It's comfortable and clean. The ceilings are low in places because of the beams. Watch your head.
You're on a working farm. There are Highland cattle and Herdwick sheep in the fields around. You'll see buzzards. At night, with no street lights, you can see a lot of stars.
For walking, you can start right from the door. The footpaths go up onto the fells or down into the valley. Ambleside has shops and places to eat. It's a steep walk down, or a short drive.
For a bigger day out, Windermere lake is about ten minutes by car. You can get boats from Bowness. The National Trust looks after a lot of the local coastline and houses. Lake District National Park has maps and information on walks.
In the cottage there's a woodburning stove, a dishwasher, and a washing machine. Bedding and towels are included. There's a cot if you need it. WiFi works, but it's a farm, so it's not lightning fast. Sorry, no pets.
