Oak Cottage is on our farm above Ambleside. It's the old farmhouse, from the 1700s. It sleeps four in four bedrooms, but there's only one bathroom, so you need to be organised.
The place has a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable and well-equipped, not a show home. You get the original beams and doors, which are nice, but mind your head. The stairs are steep, like in most old cottages.
The views are the main thing. You look right down over Stockghyll towards Windermere. The farm is 2700 acres, so there are sheep and highland cattle around. You'll see buzzards. At night, with no street lights, you can see a lot of stars.
You can walk straight from the door onto the fells. For a more structured walk, Ambleside town centre is about a mile downhill. They've got shops, pubs, and places to eat. The lake is at Waterhead, which is a bit further on.
Within half an hour you can drive to Grasmere, Coniston, or Hawkshead. Keswick and the northern lakes are a bit further, maybe 40 minutes. The National Trust has a lot of the local land and Lake District National Park is the authority for walking routes.
The facilities are what you'd expect: wood burner, dishwasher, washing machine, WiFi, TV. Bedding and towels are included. We can put a cot in one of the bedrooms if you need it. Sorry, no pets.
If you have a bigger group, we have three other cottages here. You can book them together.
