For walks, you can start right from the door. The Monsal Trail is great for a flat, easy walk along the old railway. For something more rugged, you're in the Peak District. Peak District National Park has all the information.

Other towns like Matlock, Buxton, or Chesterfield are within half an hour if you need something bigger. Sheffield and Manchester are about an hour's drive.
