Water Bailiffs Lodge

Water Bailiffs Lodge is in Lumsdale, just outside Matlock. It's the west wing of an old mill owner's house, from the 1700s I think. The place sits in about 16 acres of its own land, so it's very quiet. You get a good view of the hills towards Riber.

It sleeps six. There are three bedrooms upstairs. Two doubles and one with two single beds. There's a bathroom with a corner bath downstairs and a shower room upstairs.

It's a 4 Star place. That means it's comfortable and well looked after. The living room has oak beams and a wood burner. The kitchen is a farmhouse style, it's got everything you need. There's also a little reading area with a sofa bed if someone wants a bit of space.

Outside, there's a big open area with a couple of garden ponds and a stream. The grounds are shared with the cottage next door, but there's so much space you'll hardly notice. You can have a barbecue out there. Parking isn't a problem, there's room for four cars.

The location is the main thing. You're right in the Lumsdale Valley, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are old mill ponds and waterfalls you can walk to from the door. It's very peaceful. For a shop or a pub, you need to go into Matlock, which is about a mile away.

Matlock Bath is two miles down the road. They have the illuminations in September. Chatsworth House is about half an hour's drive. So is the Heights of Abraham. If you want to get into the Peak District proper, you can be at Monsal Head or the Derwent Dams in under 30 minutes.

Facilities: Washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, TV, cot, highchair. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring up to two dogs.

Useful links for planning: Peak District National Park and National Trust Peak District.
