Sitch Farm is our place in Starkholmes, just outside Matlock. It’s a detached stone cottage up on the hillside, so the views across the valley are good, especially from the garden.
It sleeps eight in four bedrooms. There are two bathrooms, one is an ensuite. It’s a 4 Star place, which means it’s comfortable and well looked after. It’s a listed building so the doors are a bit low and the stairs are proper old cottage stairs. They’re fine, but mind your head.
The kitchen is big, with a dishwasher and washing machine. There’s a woodburning stove in the living room, and a separate snug if people want to spread out. The sunroom has French doors out to the garden, which is enclosed. There’s a table out there and a BBQ.
You can bring two dogs. The entrance and ground floor are wheelchair accessible, but the upstairs bedrooms aren’t, obviously. Bedding and towels are included. There’s parking for a couple of cars on the gravel drive.
There’s a local pub about a ten minute walk away. Matlock town centre is a short drive or a decent walk downhill. Matlock Bath is along the road, with the cable car up to the Heights of Abraham. For a proper day out, Chatsworth House is about twenty minutes by car. Haddon Hall and Bakewell are about the same.
Carsington Water is close for sailing or cycling. For walks, you can start from the door or drive into the White Peak. The Peak District National Park site has good route ideas.
