Liverton Lodge Farmhouse

This is Liverton Lodge Farmhouse. It’s a stone farmhouse from the 1600s, up near Liverton Mines in North Yorkshire. You’re out in the fields here, looking towards the coast which is about two miles off.

It sleeps up to ten people. Five bedrooms, two bathrooms. It’s got a 3 Star rating. It’s comfortable and it’s got character, but it’s old, so mind your head on some of the beams. The stairs are fine, typical old farmhouse stairs.

There are two big sitting rooms. One has an open fire and a window seat looking out over the walled garden. The garden is large and lawned, good for kids. You get a lot of birds. Woodpeckers, finches, that sort of thing.

You’re opposite the ruins of Kilton Castle, which is interesting to look at. The local pub is about a mile walk, down the lane. There’s a shop about the same distance.

It’s a good spot for the coast. Saltburn-by-the-Sea is close, maybe a ten minute drive. They’ve got a traditional pier and a surf school. Whitby is about ten miles south. That’s where the Abbey is, and all the shops and cafes. The North York Moors National Park is on your doorstep. The visitor centre at Danby is seven miles away and worth a trip.

You’re on the edge of the Cleveland Way, so walking is easy. You can get down to places like Staithes or Robin Hood’s Bay from here.

Facilities: it’s got parking, WiFi, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a cot and a highchair. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring one dog. There’s a wood burning stove, but you need to bring your own logs.

For planning days out, these sites are useful: English Heritage for places like Whitby Abbey, and the RSPB if you’re into birdwatching. Saltholme RSPB reserve is up the coast.
