The Swiss Cottage

The Swiss Cottage is in Pickering, right in the town. You can walk to the high street in about five minutes.

It sleeps six, has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. One bathroom is upstairs, the other is a large walk-in shower off the kitchen on the ground floor. It’s handy for washing off muddy boots or a dog. We leave a dog bed, bowls and a portable shower for muddy paws. You can bring one dog.

The layout is a bit unusual. It’s deceptively big inside. From the front lounge, you go through an archway to the dining area, then up two steps into the kitchen. It’s open plan, so everyone’s together. There’s an open fire.

The stairs are standard cottage stairs. The main double bedroom and a twin are on the first floor, with the family bathroom. That has a clawfoot bath and a separate shower. Up on the second floor, under the eaves, is another double bedroom.

Out the back is an enclosed garden with a patio and stone steps leading up to it. There’s a summer house. It gets the sun.

Pickering’s a proper market town. The market’s on Mondays. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway steam trains leave from the station, about five minutes walk away. They go right through the moors to Whitby. They do a Santa Special in December, and the town has a big War Weekend with re-enactments.

For days out, Dalby Forest is about fifteen minutes by car. Good for walking and cycling, and they have a Go Ape. Castle Howard is about twenty minutes drive. The coast at Scarborough or Whitby is about half an hour. Flamingoland theme park is less than ten minutes up the road.

There’s a washing machine, dishwasher, cot and highchair if you need them. Bedding and towels are included. WiFi is included. There’s a pub and restaurant about 175 yards away.
