This is Saltersgate, one of the Hungate Cottages in Pickering. The owners, Mike and Sue, have been running them for over thirty years. It's a row of cottages converted from old outbuildings, set back from the road around shared gardens. The gardens are a big part of it, they’re very peaceful and well-kept, with an orchard and a play area for children.
The cottage sleeps seven, across four bedrooms. There are two bathrooms. It has a 4 Star rating. It’s comfortable, clean, and feels like a proper home, with things like beams and fireplaces kept in. There’s a woodburning stove and they provide logs for it. WiFi is included.
You’re a short walk from the centre of Pickering. It’s a quiet market town. There’s a castle, a few pubs, and a swimming pool about three minutes away. The main thing here is you’re right on the edge of the North York Moors. For walking, you can drive into the moors or go to Dalby Forest for cycling.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway starts in Pickering. It’s a steam train that goes to Whitby. Speaking of Whitby, that’s about a 40 minute drive. It’s a fishing port with a famous abbey. Scarborough is about half an hour the other way, for a bigger seaside day out.
York is around 45 minutes by car. You’ve got the Minster, the Railway Museum, and the shops. Closer historical sites include Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard, both within half an hour.
Facilities: parking is on site. There’s a washing machine, dishwasher, TV. Bedding and towels are included. They can provide a cot and highchair. There’s a patio area with a BBQ. One well-behaved dog is allowed.
