Kings Head Cottage is in Pickering. It’s one of a pair of old cruck-framed houses. That means it has these big arched oak beams holding it up. They used to keep animals in part of it. You can see the original beams inside.
It sleeps four. Two double bedrooms, both upstairs. There are two bathrooms: a shower room downstairs and a family bathroom with a bath upstairs. It’s got a 4 Star rating. It’s comfortable and well kept.
The layout is all on two floors. You come in the hallway, which has an old fireplace. The living room has an electric fire in a stone fireplace. It leads through to the dining room and then the kitchen. The kitchen has a big gas range cooker. The stairs are steep. They’re normal for a cottage of this age, but worth noting.
The cottage is right next to the parish church. You’ll hear the bells on a Sunday morning. It’s about a one minute walk to the main street for shops, cafes and the pub. Pickering is a proper market town. It has a castle and is a good base for the area.
The North York Moors National Park starts just outside town. There are endless walks from the door. The Pickering to Whitby steam railway leaves from here. It’s a great trip. Whitby, with the Abbey and the coast, is about 30 minutes by car. Malton, which calls itself Yorkshire’s food town, is about 20 minutes away. Castle Howard is a 15 minute drive.
Facilities are all there: wifi, TV, dishwasher, washing machine. Bedding and towels are included. There’s a cot and highchair if you need them. Parking is on site, right outside. No pets, sorry.
