There's a pub within walking distance, about a mile away. The nearest shop is in Totnes, which is about three miles drive. Totnes is a proper market town. Dartmouth is about five miles away.
For beaches, Blackpool Sands is about a twenty minute drive. It's a good beach, shingle, with facilities. Bantham, for surfing, is about thirty minutes. The South West Coast Path is easily accessible from there.
Dartmoor National Park is about a thirty minute drive for walking. If you're interested in history, the National Trust's Greenway, Agatha Christie's house, is nearby on the river. You can get a ferry to it from Dartmouth.
