Nurses Cottage

Nurses Cottage is a detached stone cottage in Askham. It sleeps six, over three bedrooms. There are two bathrooms, which is handy with a full house. It's got a 5 Star rating, which means it's well-equipped and comfortable.

We've tried to keep the old character, like the beams and the fire surround, but made sure it works for a holiday. There's a wood burner in the living room. The garden is enclosed, so it's safe for dogs or kids. You can park right outside.

Askham itself is quiet. There are two pubs within walking distance. The village shop is good for basics. Askham Hall has a posh restaurant and a seasonal outdoor pool you can book into. Lowther Castle is just up the road. The gardens and playground there are great for a day out. You can hire bikes from them too.

You're well placed for the quieter, northern side of the Lakes. Pooley Bridge on Ullswater is about ten minutes by car. From there you can get on the lake with the Ullswater Steamers, or just go for a walk along the shore. Haweswater reservoir is about fifteen minutes drive, if you want a different sort of landscape.

For bigger fells, the High Street range is very close, and Helvellyn is about half an hour away. Penrith is the nearest proper town, about ten minutes in the car. It's got supermarkets, a cinema, and the usual shops.

Facilities are all here: WiFi, washing machine, dishwasher, bedding and towels are included. We take up to two well-behaved dogs. There's bike storage if you bring them.

If you're planning walks or visits, the Lake District National Park site is useful, as is the National Trust for the Lake District.
