Mews Cottage

Mews Cottage is in Bampton, just outside the Lake District park boundary. It's a barn conversion, part of an old farmyard, so the walls are thick stone and the ground floor has those traditional Lakeland stone floors. They're lovely and cool in summer but you'll want slippers in winter.

It sleeps four, with three bedrooms and one bathroom. It's got a 4 Star rating, so it's well-equipped and comfortable. The kitchen was redone a while back, it's got a dishwasher and all the usual things. There's a wood burner in the living room. One unusual thing is it has a sauna in the utility room. I don't really use it, but some guests seem to like it after a day walking.

Bampton is a quiet hamlet. There's a village shop with a tea room and a good pub, The Mardale Inn, which does food. Another decent pub is a few minutes' drive away in Askham. If you know the film 'Withnail and I', the phone box from the movie is right across the road from the cottage.

You're in the Lowther Valley here. It's a good spot for seeing red squirrels and deer. The nearest proper lakes are Haweswater and Ullswater, both about a ten minute drive. You can walk from the doorstep up onto the fells around there, like Hallin Fell. The bigger, famous fells like Helvellyn are maybe a 25 minute drive.

Penrith is the nearest town, about seven miles away for supermarkets. Keswick is roughly half an hour by car. You can get over to the Yorkshire Dales or up to Hadrian's Wall within an hour if you want a change of scene.

Facilities are all listed, but the main ones are: parking, WiFi, TV, washing machine, cot and highchair if needed. Bedding is included. No pets, sorry.

For planning days out, the Lake District National Park site is useful, as is the National Trust for the Lake District.
