The Old Mill

The Old Mill is, as you'd guess, an old watermill. It's in Great Strickland, which is just outside the Lake District. It's detached, so no neighbours attached to the walls.

It's been done up to a high standard. Five Star rating. Sleeps six in four bedrooms, with two bathrooms. That helps with morning queues. We take up to two dogs.

The main thing is the terrace. It faces south over the river and the garden, so you get the sun. It's a proper spot for a coffee or a barbecue. Inside, it's beamed and there's a wood burner. The kitchen is modern. There's a washing machine and a dishwasher.

Great Strickland itself is quiet. There are two pubs within walking distance, The Lowther Castle Inn and The Strickland Arms. They both do food. There's also a Michelin-starred place, Allium, in Askham, if you fancy that.

For things to do, you're right on the edge of the Lake District National Park. Ullswater is about fifteen minutes away by car. You can get the steamer there, or go paddleboarding. Walkers can get to Helvellyn from there. Lowther Castle is just a mile west.

Penrith is a short drive north for bigger shops and a cinema. If you head east, you're into the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales.

On facilities: it's got all the things you'd expect. Wifi, TV, towels and bedding are included. There's parking. The garden is private.
