Columbia

This is Columbia, one of the cottages at Ashcombe in Devon. It's a big house on a private estate, sleeps fifteen across seven bedrooms. There are five bathrooms, which is good for a group that size.

The house itself is solid and comfortable. It's a 4 Star place, so it's well kept and has all the things you'd expect, like a washing machine and Wi-Fi. The floors are either tiles or wood, and some rooms have oak beams. There's a woodburning stove, a games room, and your own garden space with a barbecue. Bedding and towels are included.

The main thing here is the location on the estate. You have about a thousand acres of hills and woods to walk in right from the door. There's a heated indoor swimming pool and a sauna you can book to use at a place called Woodhouse Farm, just a short walk away. For kids, there's an outdoor playground on site.

If you want organised activities, the Ashcombe Adventure Centre is down the lane. They do clay shooting, quad bikes, that sort of thing, for an extra charge. There's also a forest activity club for children on the estate. The local village club opens some evenings and does events.

You're about three miles from the coast at Dawlish. Dartmoor and Exeter are each about a 20-minute drive. Dartmouth, Torquay, and places like Slapton Sands are all within half an hour. There's a lot within easy reach if you want to explore.

A few practical things: parking is on site. No pets allowed. Supermarkets will deliver here. For planning days out, these sites are useful: Dartmoor National Park, National Trust Devon, and Visit Devon.
