The Tap Room is inside Golden Hill Fort, about a mile from Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. It's not like a normal holiday cottage. The fort is a big, old, six-sided building with a moat. It's a listed building, so it's full of history, but it's been done up inside.
It sleeps six people in three bedrooms, and there are two bathrooms. The layout is a bit backwards from usual. The bedrooms are downstairs on the ground floor. The living room, kitchen and dining area are all together upstairs on the first floor.
That main upstairs room is open plan. There's a corner sofa and a smart TV. The kitchen has a dishwasher and a washing machine. The French doors open onto a private balcony that goes along three sides of the fort. You can sit out there and look at the fountain in the middle of the fort's courtyard.
All guests at the fort get to use the shared roof terrace. You can walk all the way around it for a full 360-degree view. You can see out over the Solent to the Dorset coast from there.
It's a 5 Star property, which means it's well-equipped and finished to a high standard. Bedding and towels are included. There's a cot and highchair if needed. Parking is on site at the fort.
The fort itself is the main thing here. For getting about, Yarmouth with its harbour is a few minutes' drive east. Colwell Bay and Compton Bay are the nearest beaches, maybe five or ten minutes by car. The Needles are at the western tip of the island, about a fifteen-minute drive.
If you're looking for walks, the National Trust Isle of Wight page is a good start. The Coastal Path goes right past. For local history, English Heritage runs Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House, both within a half-hour drive from the fort.
There is a local pub within walking distance. Sorry, no pets allowed.
