Bakers Retreat is in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. It’s a one-bedroom cottage for two people, built in the garden of our main house, which is an old listed building. You have your own parking space and the front door is your own.
The bedroom and bathroom are both upstairs. The stairs are a bit steep and narrow, so keep that in mind. Everything is on one level once you’re up there. It’s got a 4 Star rating, so it’s comfortable and well-equipped, but it’s a compact space.
The beach at Freshwater Bay is a two-minute walk down the lane. It’s shingle. There’s a good cafe right there for a coffee or a sandwich. The view from the bay is lovely.
For a proper sandy beach, you’ll want to drive. Compton Bay or Totland Bay are about ten minutes away by car. Totland has a beach cafe and restaurant. Compton is wilder, good for surfing and fossil hunting. The National Trust looks after it, so it’s clean and unspoiled.
If you like walking, you pick up the Tennyson Trail right from the cottage. It takes you up onto the downs to the monument, with big views over the sea, and you can walk all the way along the coast to The Needles. It’s proper open country.
Yarmouth is a few miles up the road. It’s a small harbour town with restaurants, a castle, and a ferry over to Lymington. There’s a big Tesco there for a shop.
The cottage has Wi-Fi, a TV, and your bedding and towels are included. There’s a shower, no bath. There’s space to store bicycles if you bring them. We don’t allow pets.
