The Sun is situated in the picturesque village of Ireby near Caldbeck and Uldale. The building dates back to the 17th century, when it served as a coaching inn and was the focal point of the village. The Sun Inn was said to be John Peel’s favourite haunt, and was also visited by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. In 1818 the poet John Keats visited Ireby and stayed at The Sun during a walking holiday of the area. It is now a stunning cottage combining a mix of traditional features with contemporary style throughout. The cottage has an open aspect at the back with superb views of the Uldale Fells.
A large family living room can be found on the ground floor, which offers large, comfortable sofas and a feature fireplace with a large wood burner. There is a separate dining room, with seating for ten, where you will find coins stuck in the old beams, a tradition from years gone by. A further snug room leads off the dining room, and next to this is the spacious, well-equipped kitchen. You will find a cosy warm Aga-style range in the kitchen with an additional breakfast area with access to the patio. A utility ‘boot’ room leads straight from the garden which is ideal for storing wet clothes following a day walking in The Lakes. A generous ‘walk in shower’ room completes the ground floor. Five bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room, are on the first floor, as well as a stunning family bathroom with feature slipper bath. Outside, you can enjoy a large, enclosed garden laid to lawn, a patio seating area offering unrivalled views, and a further shared garden area, which has a fire pit and children’s play area. Depending on the time of year you might see red squirrels at the feeding station, bats and many species of birds including buzzards, gold finches and owls. Chickens live in the bottom garden and will provide fresh eggs during your stay.
The surrounding area, home to grazing sheep, is ideal for walkers, and there is an abundance of birds and wildlife. Ireby is a very friendly village with a local pub and hosts an annual music festival attracting leading performers. The hills at the back of Skiddaw and Blencathra are within easy reach and there are many gentle walks to be had around the local Ireby and Uldale area. The village is also served by a farm shop selling fresh milk and seasonal vegetables. Beach 15 miles. Shop 6 miles, pub and restaurant 20 yards.
The Sun can be booked together with the adjoining Keats Barn to accommodate up to 14 guests.
