Parliament Cottage is a fantastic three bedroom thatched cottage, sleeping up to six guests in total. This grade II listed cottage is definitely not your average holiday property, with a vast history dating back to the 17th century, this cottage certainly has some stories to tell.
One of the most fascinating being that William of Orange is said to have held his first ’Parliament’ or people gathering here after landing in Brixham in the November of 1688. He is said to have met Lord Seymour of Berry Pomeroy castle before his journey to London. In the front garden of the cottage is the ’Parliament stone’ with an inscription on outlining this, which is said to have been erected by a descendant of Lord Seymour in the mid 19th Century.
As you enter the cottage via the front entrance, it is clear to see that the property has been sympathetically restored to a high standard, while retaining both character and modern features. Guests initially find themselves in the kitchen/dining area, fully equipped with everything they could need to rustle up a great family meal and with dining table and seating with wall-mounted Smart TV in addition, a great social space. There is a door from the kitchen area leading to a double bedroom, this bedroom is on the opposite side of the cottage to the others and may suit an older relative or just a guest wishing to have a bit of space away from the other bedrooms. Just off the kitchen is a door leading to this floors toilet, which boasts high ceilings and beautiful exposed stone, just one of the great features of the property, as part of this room was once used as a ’smoker’ and bread oven over 400 years ago where the residents would cure meats. The ground floor toilet also has benefit of instant hot water. Down a few steps and guests find themselves in the cosy living room with its wood burner, a great room to relax in at the end of a long day. From the living room, there are a few steps up to a corridor which leads to another bedroom containing two single beds and next to this is the bathroom, with stylish freestanding claw foot bath and a separate shower cubicle. Upstairs then leads to the final bedroom, which is in fact the biggest of the three rooms, this bedroom contains a super kingsize zip and link bed which can be configured as either a super kingsize bed or individual single beds. The rear garden of Parliament Cottage is a peaceful lawned area, surrounded by countryside views and seating for guests to use. As there is not much light pollution in the area, the garden makes for a fabulous area to star gaze at night! Beach 4 miles.
