Gowanhill

Gowanhill is in Whiting Bay, on Arran. It's a detached house. It sleeps ten, which is a lot, but it's laid out over four bedrooms and three bathrooms so it doesn't feel crammed in.

The view is the main thing. You look right out over the bay. The house is on the hill, so you get the full panorama. There's a garden and patio to sit out in.

Inside, it's a 4 star place. That means it's well kitted out and comfortable. There's a woodburning stove, a dishwasher, washing machine, all the usual stuff. Bedding and towels are included. We've got a cot and highchair if you need them. There's also a games room, which is handy if the weather turns.

The stairs are a bit steep. Just so you know.

You can bring two dogs. There's parking on site.

Whiting Bay itself is quiet. There's a shop, a couple of cafes, and a local bar you can walk to. The golf course is just there. A forestry walk from the village takes you to Glenashdale Falls and the Giant's Graves, which are these ancient burial cairns.

Lamlash is the next village along. The bay there is busy with boats. You can get sea kayaking or powerboat trips from there. You can also get the small ferry over to the Holy Isle. It's a Buddhist community where the animals roam free. It's an interesting trip.

Arran's good for wildlife. You often see seals. Red deer and red squirrels are common. Boat trips from the island can go out to look for whales and dolphins.

For days out, Brodick Castle is about a twenty minute drive. The Arran Distillery is in Lochranza, which is maybe thirty minutes north. If you fancied going over to the mainland, the ferry from Lochranza goes to Kintyre.
