Pickering is a wonderful base for exploring the North York Moors and the nearby coastline, Pickering itself is a pretty market town, with the popular market taking place every Monday. The steam train winds its way from Pickering over the rolling heather, through valleys and over hills to many picturesque villages all the way to Whitby and is ideal for a special day out. In December they even have a themed Christmas Santa Special on the steam train. One of the highlights on the calendar in Pickering is the annual War Weekend, where as well as battle re-enactments, there is live music and the town seems to slip back in time. The surrounding North Yorkshire Moors is a haven for walkers with many trails to explore and an abundance of wildlife. Dalby Forest has a choice of trails for cyclists as well as walkers, plus for thrill seekers you have the Go Ape zip lines through the tree tops. Nearby you have Malton the food capital of Yorkshire with a market, award-winning restaurants and a cookery school. Castle Howard is one of Britain’s finest stately homes, sure to fill you with awe. There are also the beaches of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington nearby to explore.
