Set just 5 minutes’ drive from Okehampton, perfect for anyone wishing to explore West Devon and Cornwall, and especially for discovering the spectacular Dartmoor National Park, known as the ’gateway to Dartmoor’. Okehampton is an old market town with a good selection of shops supermarkets. You can easily explore the beautiful countryside and discover the local wildlife, including the iconic Dartmoor ponies on the moors. Walk or cycle along the Tarka Trail or the old railway to Meldon reservoir and enjoy some stunning views. National Trust Castle Drogo is also nearby for a visit, and Devon and Cornwall’s bustling resorts and beautiful beaches are just a short drive away, including Bude, Westward Ho, Teignmouth, Dawlish, and Exmouth, reached within an hour. To the south is Tavistock, a World Heritage Site, and the ’ocean city’ of Plymouth, with so much to see including museums, galleries, and an exciting waterfront. Exeter is 25 miles to the east and served by a rail link from Okehampton, 38 minutes. For those not wanting outdoor activities, there is the historic Exeter just a short drive away with its cathedral and underground passages. Plymouth is also a short drive away, which boasts an aquarium and lovely seafront leading onto the seaside towns of South Devon.
Tavistock is another must, just a half an hour drive across Dartmoor, this town is an abundance of shops, somewhere to while the day away with some atmosphere.
Locally Okehampton is a lovely quaint town, worth a visit. It has castle ruins and the local railway which has recently opened up taking passengers to Crediton and Exeter taking you along some fantastic scenery on the way. It is really worth taking the time to accommodate this journey, which takes you into the heat of the city for a really lovely day out.
