St Illex

St Illex is a bungalow up on the headland above Port Gaverne. It's detached and all on one level, which is good if you don't want stairs. The main living area is open plan, but split over two levels, with big bi-fold doors that open onto the patio. The main thing is the view. You get a good look along the coast from there.

It sleeps eight in four bedrooms. There are two bathrooms. It has a 5 Star rating, which means it's well-equipped and comfortable. We take two dogs.

The cottage is right by the coast path. You can be on it in about a minute. The beach at Port Gaverne is a six or seven minute walk downhill. Port Isaac is a bit further, maybe a fifteen minute walk along the path. It's the village from Doc Martin.

The kitchen is new and has everything you'd need. There's a wood burner for cooler evenings, and the garden is fully enclosed.

For food, you're spoilt. There's a bistro next door. Port Isaac has good fish shops selling crab and lobster, plus restaurants and pubs. Several well-known chefs have places nearby, including Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac and Paul Ainsworth and Rick Stein over in Padstow.

If you're here for the coast, it's ideal. You've got the path on the doorstep. Polzeath beach for surfing is a short drive. There's a water sports centre on Port Gaverne beach that does kayaking and coasteering. You can cycle the Camel Trail from Wadebridge to Padstow.

Other places within about half an hour include Tintagel Castle, Boscastle, Bude, and Bodmin Moor.

Facilities: it's got pretty much everything. Washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, TV, parking for a few cars, bedding and towels included. We provide a cot and highchair.

Useful links for planning: National Trust Cornwall and Cornwall Council Countryside for walking, and The Camel Trail for cycling.
