Aira Cottage is in Knotts, a hamlet near Ullswater. It's a detached stone barn conversion. You get the building and the garden to yourselves. It looks out over fields and woods, with a small river at the bottom of the garden.
Sleeps four. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms. It's got a 4 Star rating. That means it's comfortable and well-equipped. It's not brand new, but it's solid and clean. There's a woodburning stove for cooler evenings.
The main thing is the location. You're right on the edge of Lake Ullswater. You can walk across a field to the shore. The views of the fells from here are very good.
There's an outbuilding with a table tennis table and a dartboard. It's open on one side, so it's a bit breezy, but it's fine for a bit of fun if it's raining.
For walking, you can start right from the door onto National Trust land. Helvellyn is nearby if you want a big day out. Glenridding is about three miles away, and Pooley Bridge is six. You can get the steamer from either place to travel down the lake.
There's a pub and a restaurant about a mile and a half away. The nearest shop is in Glenridding, three miles.
Facilities: dishwasher, washing machine, TV, parking. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring up to three dogs. The garden is enclosed, but it's not totally escape-proof for very determined dogs, so just be aware.
