Lantern Cottage

Lantern Cottage is our place in Staintondale. It's between Scarborough and Whitby, up on the cliffs. You're on your own up there, really. It's a converted barn, detached. The views are the main thing. You can see right along the coast, from Scarborough Castle down to Flamborough Head on a clear day.

It's for two people. One bedroom, one bathroom. It's got a 4 Star rating, so it's well finished. There's underfloor heating and a wood burner for winter. The bed is king size, and the bathroom has a big spa bath. The stairs to the sleeping area are a ship's ladder, so they're steep and open-tread. You need to be okay with that.

Outside, there's a private garden with a hot tub and a patio. It all faces the sea. The property is in the North York Moors National Park, right on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast. You're surrounded by National Trust land. We see deer, hares, and barn owls regularly.

The village is Ravenscar, about a mile away. It's tiny. There's a shop and a tea room. For a pub, you need to go to Robin Hood's Bay or down into Scarborough.

You can walk straight from the door onto the coastal path. It's about a 40-minute walk along the cliff top to Robin Hood's Bay. Whitby is a 15-minute drive north, Scarborough about 20 minutes south. The North York Moors National Park authority site has good walking routes. For local history, the National Trust Yorkshire Coast pages are useful.

Facilities: there's parking right outside. Wi-Fi, TV, a washing machine, and a dishwasher. All bedding and towels are included. No pets, sorry.
