The Farmhouse

The Farmhouse is in Knockerdown, Derbyshire. It's quite remote, down a one-mile farm track. The track is fine for normal cars, but it's unmade, so take it slow.

It sleeps ten people in five bedrooms. There are three bathrooms, which helps with a full house. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable and well-equipped, not minimalist.

The layout is a bit unusual because it's an old farmhouse. There are stairs at both ends. The main staircase is fine. The back stairs from the kitchen are narrower, more like a cottage staircase. There's also a third, very steep staircase that goes up to the attic games room. It's the original servants' stairs, really. Kids love it.

You get the whole place and the garden to yourselves. There's a BBQ and garden furniture. The view from the back is over fields. We get kestrels hunting in the meadow.

Inside, there's a wood burner in the kitchen. It heats the whole ground floor well. There are two living rooms, so people can spread out. Everything you'd expect is there: WiFi, TV, dishwasher, washing machine, cot and highchair. Bedding and towels are included.

You can bring up to three dogs. The garden is enclosed, but it's not totally escape-proof for a determined dog, so keep an eye on them.

The local pub and a restaurant are about two miles away. The nearest proper shop is five miles, in Ashbourne, so come prepared.

For things to do, you're right on the edge of the Peak District. Carsington Water is close by for walks, cycling, and water sports. Peak District National Park has all the walking route information. Chatsworth House is about a 30-minute drive. So is Alton Towers if that's your thing. Derby is 4 miles away for bigger shops or a cinema.
