Chestnut House is part of Sherrill Farm, near Dunterton. It's on the Devon and Cornwall border. You turn off down a private drive to get there. The main house and barns are about three hundred years old, converted into cottages. Ours is one of them, set around a courtyard.
It sleeps twelve. There are four bedrooms and each one has its own bathroom, which is handy for a big group. There's also a wet room on the ground floor. We allow up to two dogs.
The key thing here is the leisure building. There's a large indoor heated pool, a hot tub, a gym, and a games room with a bowling alley. They're open until 9pm. Outside, there's an all-weather tennis court, a kids' play area, and the grounds stretch over 16 acres. There are three ponds. Two are for fishing and one is left for wildlife. You often see foxes and badgers in the evening.
The cottage itself has a wood burning stove, a dishwasher, WiFi, and parking right outside. All the bedding is included and we can provide a cot and highchair.
You're right on the edge of Dartmoor. It's about ten minutes by car to get onto the moor for walking. The Tamar Valley is close by as well. Tavistock is six miles away, it's a proper market town with a pannier market. Launceston is about the same distance the other way, in Cornwall.
For a day out, the National Trust's Cotehele and Buckland Abbey are within half an hour. So is Morwellham Quay and Lydford Gorge. The north and south coasts of both Devon and Cornwall are within an hour's drive, so you've got a lot of choice for beaches.
There's a pub a mile down the road that does food. The nearest shop is about four and a half miles away in Lifton, where there's a good farm shop.
