Speke's Retreat

Speke's Retreat is two old barns that we converted side by side near Milford. They're in a quiet spot at the end of a lane, next to fields. You get both barns and the garden to yourselves.

It sleeps up to twelve people. There are five bedrooms and each one has its own bathroom, which is handy with a big group. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable and everything works.

The kitchen has the normal things: a dishwasher, washing machine. There's a TV and WiFi. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring up to two dogs.

You can walk straight from the door onto the coastal path. The cliffs are about a mile away. The closest beach is at Speke's Mill Mouth, but it's a steep path down. Hartland Quay is similar.

The village of Hartland is four miles away. It's got a shop, a post office, and a couple of pubs that do food.

If you drive, Bude is about half an hour. That's got a big sandy beach at Widemouth Bay. Clovelly is a bit closer, maybe twenty minutes. It's a steep, cobbled street down to the harbour. There's a charge to go in. The National Trust has the details.

The Tamar Lakes are a fifteen minute drive. You can fish or do some water sports there. For a day out, you can get the boat to Lundy Island from Bideford or Ilfracombe, which is about forty minutes away.
