Arthur House

This is Arthur House on Dalby Square in Margate. It's a big Victorian place that sleeps ten, all in their own ensuite rooms.

It's a 5 Star rating, which really just means everything is in good order and there's a lot of space. The history is the main thing here. The house was built in 1895 and we've kept a lot of the original features, like the high ceilings with all the plasterwork and the marble fireplaces. They're impressive. Some of the walls inside show the old plaster, just as it is.

The furniture is a mix of old and new, a lot of it from R. G. Scotts which is the big antique warehouse down the road.

Downstairs there are three big reception rooms. You can all spread out, or everyone can be in the same room. The kitchen has a big island and a table where people can sit. The garden is enclosed.

There are five bedrooms upstairs. They all have their own bathroom, which makes it easy with a group. A couple of the rooms have a side view of the sea.

It's on Dalby Square, which is a quiet, green square a few streets back from the seafront. You can walk to the Old Town and the harbour in five minutes. Turner Contemporary is about a ten minute walk. Margate Main Sands is the same.

The restoration was done with help from a heritage scheme, so they do open the house for public tours a few days a year when it's not booked.

Facilities: washing machine, dishwasher, TV, stairgate. There's no private parking, but you can get permits from the council and on-street parking is usually okay. No pets, sorry.

If you're looking for things to do, the National Trust has sites like Quex Park nearby. For the coast, Visit Thanet has good information. Within half an hour's drive you've got Canterbury, Whitstable, and Ramsgate.
