Hamilton Lodge is a big old Victorian house in Westgate, just up from Margate. Sleeps fifteen, six bedrooms, three bathrooms. It's got a 5 Star rating but honestly, I think that means it feels properly finished, not just a big empty shell. You do get the size and the period features with it.
The house is from 1875. It's got that turret you see from the street. The ceilings are high, which makes it feel airy even with a full group. There's a lot of original stuff, like the coloured glass in the hall. The main rooms are big. The sitting room fits everyone for a film, and there's a quieter library if you need a break.
Best bit is probably the back. There's a big open kitchen and living area with sliding doors straight out into the garden. It ends up being one big space if the weather's decent.
Six bedrooms are spread over the upper floors. One has the turret, so you get a little reading nook up there. There are side sea views from a couple of rooms. The sea is only a few hundred yards away. All the bathrooms have underfloor heating, which is nice.
Westgate itself is quiet. Good sandy beach, a few shops and cafes, and a nice old cinema that shows proper films. You can walk along the coast to Margate in about twenty minutes, or it's a five minute drive. The Viking Trail coastal path goes right past, good for walks or cycles.
It takes two dogs. The garden is enclosed. There's parking on the drive for a few cars. All the usual stuff is there: WiFi, washing machine, dishwasher, cot and highchair if you need them. Bedding and towels are included.
For local information, the Visit Thanet site is useful, and for bigger days out, English Heritage has listings for places like Richborough Roman Fort, which is about a twenty minute drive.
