Whitehall Pele Tower

Whitehall Pele Tower is our place in Mealsgate. It’s a proper old pele tower from the 1300s, built to keep people safe from border raids. My family’s owned it for over a hundred and fifty years.

It sleeps eight. Four bedrooms, two bathrooms. It’s got a 4 Star rating. The thing about old buildings is you can’t really change them, so you have to work with them. The walls are thick. The ceilings are low in a few doorways, so watch your head. The stairs are stone, and they wind upwards in a spiral – take it slow. There’s an enormous fireplace in the main sitting room.

It’s detached. There’s about an acre of grounds, with two decent lawns for a kickabout if you want. There’s also the ruins of a Victorian manor house in the garden. It’s just part of the place now.

Inside, we’ve tried to make it comfortable for modern living. There’s a dishwasher, washing machine, WiFi, and a TV you can cast to. There’s also underfloor heating to keep the stone floors warm, and a woodburning stove. We include all the bedding and towels. There’s an electric vehicle charger on site.

You can bring two dogs.

As for location, you’re in the countryside. There’s a pub about two miles away. Shops and a restaurant are about four miles, in Wigton. You’re well placed for both coasts and the Lakes though. Bassenthwaite Lake is about twenty minutes’ drive. Keswick and Cockermouth are about the same. The Solway Coast is to the west. If you’re into walking or mountain biking, Whinlatter Forest has trails. Hadrian’s Wall isn’t far either, maybe half an hour.
