Birkshaw Barn is up in West End Town, just inside the Northumberland National Park. It's a detached barn conversion we did a few years ago, using a lot of wood from our own woods for the outside.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms, both with their own bathrooms. One bedroom is on the ground floor and the doorway is wide, so it suits people who can't do stairs. The main bedroom is upstairs, with vaulted ceilings.
The main room is open plan. The kitchen's nice to cook in, and the big bifold doors look straight out over the valley. The view is the main thing, really. There's a wood burner for when it gets cold.
It's got a 5 Star rating. That means it's well-insulated and has things like an electric car charger. It's comfortable, but it's not a show home. You can walk in muddy boots.
You're right on the edge of the National Park for walking. Hadrian's Wall is on your doorstep. The Sycamore Gap tree is a drive away. The Vindolanda Roman Fort is about a twenty minute walk from the barn, which is handy. Northumberland National Park has all the walking information.
The nearest proper village is Bardon Mill. It's got a little shop and a coffee spot. There's a hotel there that does food, including Thai. You can get the train from there to Newcastle or Carlisle if you fancy a city day.
Hexham is the nearest market town, about fifteen minutes by car. It's got an Abbey, shops, and plenty of pubs. Corbridge is a bit further, good for a wander and a coffee by the river.
The coast is about an hour's drive north. Places like Bamburgh and Alnmouth. If you golf, Close House is half an hour away. Hexham Racecourse is about twenty minutes.
Facilities wise: it's all there. Wifi, TV, dishwasher, washing machine, bedding and towels are included. There's a cot and highchair if you need them. Plenty of parking, including the electric car charger. No pets, sorry.
For planning days out, the National Trust and Visit Northumberland sites are useful.
