The Horseshoe is a one-bedroom cottage here in Melkridge. It sleeps two. There’s one bathroom and it’s all on the ground floor, so no stairs to worry about.
It’s got a 3 Star rating. That means it’s comfortable and clean, but not a luxury hotel. The main thing is the view. The living room has big glass doors that look straight out over the fields. The view is completely open, nothing in the way. You can sit on your own private patio in the evening and watch the sun go down.
It’s part of a small group of four other cottages, so you’ll see other guests sometimes. You can book them together if you’re coming with a bigger group.
We take up to two dogs. There’s a wild grass meadow area here that’s handy for them, and you can walk straight into the field opposite.
You’re about a mile from Hadrian’s Wall itself. We’re right in the middle of the World Heritage Site. For walking, you’re spoiled for choice. You can head west towards Housesteads Fort or east to other bits of the wall. The Northumberland National Park is on your doorstep. It’s very quiet and dark at night, good for stars.
Within about half an hour you can drive to Hexham, which has a big supermarket and the abbey. Corbridge is a bit closer, nice for a wander and a coffee. If you go a bit further north, you can get to Kielder Water, which is good for cycling or a walk around the reservoir.
The cottage has WiFi, a TV, a washing machine, and parking right outside. Bedding is included. All the electricity is included in the price.
