Mere Brook

Mere Brook is one of seven cottages at a place called Town Mills, just outside Great Torrington. It’s the building made famous as ‘Tarka’s Mill’ in the book, which is a nice bit of history.

It’s a two-bedroom place for four people. Both bedrooms are upstairs and each one has its own bathroom with a shower over the bath. That’s handy.

The cottage used to be part of the old saw mill. The lounge looks out over the water channel that used to power the mill, and you can see the old water wheel from the window. It’s a quiet spot.

You get a sunroom at the front, then a lounge and diner area, with the kitchen off that. The kitchen looks out over the garden and the river. It’s not a huge kitchen, but it’s got what you need, including a dishwasher and a washing machine.

Being on site means you can use the shared facilities. There’s an indoor swimming pool that’s kept warm. You can book it for just your group if you want. There’s also a games room with a pool table and football table, and a fenced play area by the river for kids.

Great Torrington itself is a small market town about a ten-minute walk away. There are a few shops, cafes, and a couple of pubs. The Tarka Trail is right here for walking or cycling. The RHS Garden Rosemoor is literally next door.

You’re well placed for getting out. The north Devon coast, like Westward Ho!, is about a 20-minute drive. Exmoor is about half an hour away. Barnstaple is 20 minutes in the other direction for bigger shops.

Things to know: the stairs are a typical cottage staircase, so they’re a bit steep and turn a corner. We allow up to two dogs. Bedding and towels are included. There’s parking right outside the cottage.
