Tarka is one of the cottages at Town Mills, just outside Great Torrington. It's the biggest one, sleeps twelve. It was the old grain mill, so it's a big, three-storey stone building. The original waterwheel is still on the side.
You come in on the ground floor into a large open living and dining area. The kitchen is there too. It's well kitted out, we put in decent pans and there's an extra small fridge for drinks. Out the back, the windows look over the river and the fields.
There are six bedrooms. Two are doubles with their own shower rooms, one on the first floor and one on the second. The other four are twin rooms. There's a family bathroom too. The ceilings on the top floor are quite low, just so you know.
On the site itself, there's a shared indoor swimming pool. It's kept warm. You can book it for just your group for an hour if you want. There's a games room with a pool table and table football. Outside by the river, there's a fenced play area for kids with swings and a slide. The gardens are about three acres, with streams and the mill leat running through. Peacocks wander around.
The place is right on the edge of Torrington Common, which is 365 acres of woods and paths. You can walk straight onto it. Great Torrington town is about a mile away for shops and a few pubs.
For days out, the RHS Garden Rosemoor is basically next door. The coast is about a twenty minute drive. Westward Ho! has a long sandy beach. Instow is good too. Clovelly, that famous village with the steep cobbled street, is about half an hour away. For a boat trip to Lundy Island, you go to Bideford, which is ten minutes down the road.
The cottage has parking, WiFi, a washing machine, and a cot and highchair if needed. You can bring up to two dogs.
