The living room is a warm and welcoming space with cosy decoration and traditional furnishings and as an added personal touch the owner’s artwork is displayed throughout adding wonderful colours and visual appeal to the cottage rooms. There is an inglenook fireplace at the heart of the living room with a wood burner at the centre and several cosy reading areas. From the living room, you can enter the charming cottage garden through the patio doors. The warm and inviting kitchen is a great place to relax and with the large rustic table at the centre is the perfect spot to have a hearty country breakfast. There is a gas range available to fulfil all of your cooking needs as well as all other modern conveniences. A useful ground floor cloakroom is available off the entrance hallway. The family bathroom is equipped with a full bath and a telephone shower attachment and there is a separate toilet also on the first floor.
At the top of the stairs the spacious principal bedroom with a double bed has stunning views over the garden to the South Downs. There are two more double bedrooms both with views to the church at the front of the cottage. The garden is a lovely sun trap in the summer and a great place to have your morning coffee and contemplate the day’s activities. In the evenings the rural setting allows for stunning night-time skies where the stars are spectacular, and you can enjoy the evening activities of the local owls. To finish the property off, there is off street parking available for two cars. Please note that this property is only suitable for a maximum of four adults due to the size.
Cottage is set in a stunning location with elevated views of the surrounding South Downs countryside and picturesque walks from the door to the hills beyond. Although set in a wonderfully rural location it is within walking distance of both a local shop and pub. The parish church of St Giles next door to the cottage has been established since 1278 and it nestles beautifully under the wooded slopes of the South Downs. A typical Sussex Church with its external flintwork and tall spire St. Giles takes its worthy place along the 42 mile line of Sussex Down Churches along the South Downs Way.
It is only a short walk to join the South Downs Way with several footpaths leading up to this national trail. Once on the Downs you may like to stop for a moment to check out the local nature reserves or investigate the ancient barrows and cross-dykes on Heyshott Down. For those who prefer walking along the flat the Serpent Trail meanders around the edge of the village crossing the heathlands of Lavington and Graffham Commons enroute to Heyshott and Midhurst. There is rare wildlife species such as the Dartford Warbler may be found. If archaeology is your interest several bronze age tumuli can be seen on Gallows Hill.
The cottage is less than 4 miles from the historic town of Petworth with a wide variety of antique shops and tea rooms along with Petworth House and deer park. The house contains the largest display of Turner paintings outside of London while the park is the design of Capability Brown. Both are owned and maintained by The National Trust. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. Petworth itself is full of quaint houses and cottages many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms, so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following your enjoyment of Petworth House and Park. Make time to visit the thriving country market town of Midhurst. It is a delightful mix of medieval Georgian Victorian and Edwardian architecture as well as a town of historical social and political significance. In Midhurst the grand Tudor ruins of Cowdray House form an imposing backdrop to Midhurst a market town full of character and old-world charm. The town is home to many fine 17th and 18th century buildings and provided the setting for many stories by past resident HG Wells. Today Midhurst is closely associated with Cowdray Park well known for the Polo held from spring onwards and in particular the Gold Cup events which are hosted each summer.
The vibrant city of Chichester is just 9 miles from Church Cottage and is one of the great well-preserved Georgian cities in the UK providing a key role in Sussex affairs since Roman times. The streets are packed with listed buildings including the imposing cathedral which has been a part of Chichester history for almost 1000 years. The city centre is enclosed within the ancient city walls which is ideal for exploring by foot. With its plethora of attractions shops and restaurants Chichester is a cosmopolitan city with a vibrant and friendly vibe and is of course home to a dynamic arts scene offering many galleries and museums to peruse. It is also home to the famous Festival Theatre. which is renowned for its quality of productions as well as featuring many world premieres.
Drive 20 minutes and you can be at the Goodwood Estate where you can enjoy the premier motorsport events as well as the Glorious Goodwood racing festival. Or of course you can explore the wonders Goodwood House which combines the glamour of a great English country house with the warmth of a family home. Home to the Earl and Countess of March this elegant Sussex house provides a dramatic setting for one of the most significant private art collections in the country.
