At the foot of Older Hill, half a mile down an unamde lane, and set amongst the flora and fauna of Woolbeding Common, Swallows Bottom is an 18th-century rural cottage that’s been updated and modernised for adventurers of all ages.
Surrounded on three sides by a National Trust-owned common, within the South Downs National Park, there is a mix of heathland and woodland, streams and footpaths to explore on your doorstep. The cottage itself is a historic countryside farming house with rustic yet modernised interior including a spacious kitchen with an electric Aga and a cosy wood burner.
The living room includes a second wood burner. It’s the perfect sanctuary for relaxation after a busy day exploring in the woods or swimming in the pool. As well as the Smart TV, there’s a ceiling-mounted projector and popcorn maker for fun cinema nights in. Upstairs there are four bedrooms - one with bunk beds ideal for the younger ones, and a family bathroom.
At the top of the garden is the pool area which includes a large studio that sleeps an extra two. The studio includes its own kitchenette and bathroom. The studio is adjacent to the heated pool . Next to the pool and studio is a raised decked area and rattan furniture that’s perfect for summer entertaining - a real sun trap late into the evening that feels more like the south of France on a hot summer’s day. The pool is set up for fun and games, with a slide and a Fastlane current system that jets water to mimic the flow of a river – great for kids and fantastic exercise for adults.
What truly makes Swallows Bottom unique is its tucked-away position with miles of footpaths in every direction. There are woodland and heathland to explore on its doorstep, and sparkling streams and ponds all around.
Waiting to be discovered in the woods is the original spring, where Swallows Bottom used to source its water, a woodland campsite with a parachute cover. Further afield, you will discover the cows that graze the heathland. For wildlife lovers, there are bats and badgers, owls and foxes, deer and buzzards – and swallows of course.
Swallows Bottom is an amazing location for creating your own adventures and treasured memories.
