The Royal Apartment is a flat inside Dalrymple House, which is an Edwardian castle near Portpatrick. It sleeps ten, in five bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, which is handy.
It's a big, interesting space across two floors. They've kept a lot of the original features, like the wooden floors and a spiral staircase. The furniture is a mix of old pieces and newer things. The kitchen is modern. It feels more like staying in someone's unusual home than a standard holiday let.
The stairs are worth mentioning. They're the original art deco spiral ones. They're steep and open. You need to be steady on your feet.
You get your own private entrance and a courtyard. The castle estate is about 2000 acres. You can walk straight out into it. There are forest trails, a walled garden, two lochs, and a couple of beaches. You'll see rabbits and all sorts of birds. You might see seals or dolphins from the shore. You will need wellies. The grounds are proper countryside.
Portpatrick village is a couple of minutes drive away. It's a small harbour. There's a golf course right next to the estate, a few places to eat, and some shops.
For a day out, you can drive to Logan Botanic Garden, which is about half an hour away. It's a Royal Botanic Garden outpost with all sorts of exotic plants. The National Trust for Scotland's Culzean Castle is also within 30 minutes.
Facilities are all included. Wifi, TV, washing machine, dishwasher, bedding and towels. There's a cot if you need it. You can bring up to two dogs. There's parking right outside.
