Thorn Cottage is in Spark Bridge. It’s a detached, ordinary-looking stone cottage from the outside. You can’t see it from the main road, which is good.
It sleeps eight, which it does by having four bedrooms and two bathrooms. It’s got a 3 Star rating. The decor is comfortable but not new, and everything works. The stairs are typical cottage stairs, so they’re a bit steep and narrow.
There are two fires. A wood burner in the living room and an open fire in the dining room. The kitchen is at the back and has an old stone sink and a good sized table. The conservatory gets the sun in the afternoon. It’s a big space, so a family or two families won’t be on top of each other.
You can bring two dogs. The garden is enclosed with a wall and a hedge. It’s not vast, but it’s secure and there’s a patio with furniture.
The pub is about a three minute walk. They do food. The nearest shop is in Greenodd, about a mile and a half away. For a bigger shop, Ulverston is ten minutes by car. It’s a proper market town. It’s where Stan Laurel was born, so there’s a Laurel and Hardy museum if that’s your thing.
You’re right on the edge of the Lake District here. It’s quieter than the central lakes. Coniston Water is about a fifteen minute drive. Windermere is twenty minutes. You can get on the steamer at Lakeside, which is near Newby Bridge, about ten minutes away. The Lake District National Park website has good information for walks.
If it rains, the Lakes Aquarium is at Lakeside. South Lakes Zoo and the Lakeland Motor Museum are also close by, near Newby Bridge. Cartmel is a bit further on, maybe twenty minutes. It’s known for the racecourse and the sticky toffee pudding.
The facilities are what you’d expect. Washing machine, WiFi, towels included, a cot and highchair. There’s parking for two, maybe three cars if you park carefully.
