Castle Cottage is in Castleton, on the edge of the moors. It’s an old cottage, so the walls are thick and the ceilings are a bit low in places. If you’re over six foot, you’ll need to mind your head on a couple of beams.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms, both with their own shower room. It’s got a 4 Star rating. It’s comfortable and well-kept. There’s a wood burner in the living room, which is good for taking the chill off in the evenings. The kitchen has a range cooker, which works well. The front garden is walled, so it’s enclosed. The back garden is bigger and gets the sun.
You can bring two dogs. The village is surrounded by sheep though, so they need to be on a lead until you’re out on the moor proper.
The village shop and a couple of pubs are a few minutes’ walk away. The pubs do food. The train station is also in the village. The Esk Valley Railway line goes from here right into Whitby. It’s a slow, scenic route.
For walking, you’re right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. You can start from the door. Danby Dale is just there. For a day out, Whitby is about half an hour by car or train. Helmsley, with its castle ruins, is about 40 minutes. Stokesley is a 20 minute drive, it’s a nice market town.
What’s here: parking for one car on the gravel drive, WiFi, a washing machine, a dishwasher, a cot and a stairgate if you need them. Bedding and towels are included.
