The White Cottage

The White Cottage is in Furness Vale, right next to the Peak Forest Canal towpath. It's attached to the house where I live, but you've got your own front door. It was built in the 1840s.

It sleeps four. Two bedrooms upstairs, one bathroom downstairs. It's a 3 Star place, so it's comfortable and clean but not high-end. The stairs are steep and winding, which is pretty normal for a cottage this old.

You get a little enclosed garden with a lawn and a patio. Upstairs, the kitchen door opens onto a small terrace that looks over the canal. You can watch the barges going by from there.

There's a pub about 400 yards up the road. Another one, that does food, is two miles away. A good fish and chip shop is a few minutes' walk. For a supermarket, it's a mile away. You can walk there along the canal towpath, which is nice, or it's five minutes in the car.

You're right on the edge of the Peak District here. Buxton is about a 15 minute drive. Castleton, for the caves and Mam Tor, is maybe 25 minutes. If you want a city day, Manchester with all its museums and theatres is under an hour. For walking, you're basically already in it. The moors are right there.

Facilities: WiFi, TV, washing machine, parking for one car on the drive. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring one well-behaved dog.

If you're planning walks or days out, the Peak District National Park site is useful. For local history, National Trust has places nearby.
