France Cottage is in Patching, a small village on the edge of the South Downs. It's an old flint cottage, part of it from the 1700s. The name comes from a prisoner of war camp that was here during the Napoleonic Wars.
It sleeps four across three bedrooms. One has a king-size bed, the other two are singles. There's one bathroom, done up in a 1930s style with a shower over the bath. The stairs and doorways are what you'd expect from an old cottage, so mind your head in a couple of spots.
There's an open fire in the living room. The kitchen has a separate larder. The garden gets sun and looks out over fields, usually with horses in them. It's very quiet.
You can walk straight onto the Downs from the village. The path starts near the church, which is a five-minute walk up the lane. Long Furlong is a good short walk, it's like a mini version of the Downs with good views.
Arundel is about ten minutes by car. It's got the castle, the cathedral, and some good pubs along the river. The Wetland Centre there is worth a visit if you like birdlife. For the coast, Climping Beach and the dunes at Littlehampton West Beach are roughly fifteen to twenty minutes away.
Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are within half an hour. Chichester, with the theatre, is about twenty-five minutes.
Practical things: the facilities listed are all here and working. Bedding and towels are included. We can take up to two well-behaved dogs. There's a washing machine, a dishwasher, and a cot if you need one. The WiFi is okay for basic stuff, but it's a rural connection so don't expect to stream on multiple devices.
