The Chatham

The Chatham is my place in Lyme Regis. It's on a street fairly near the front, about a five minute walk to the Cobb. It's a big, old, listed house and it sleeps eight. Four bedrooms, three bathrooms.

It's got a four star rating, which means it's comfortable and well looked after. The kitchen is modern and it has things like a dishwasher and a washing machine. There's a woodburning stove for cooler evenings.

The layout is a bit different because it's on three floors. The main living room and kitchen are on the first floor. That's because the views from there are the main point. You can see right along the coast towards Portland from the windows and the little terrace. It's a proper outlook.

The stairs are worth mentioning. They are the original ones, so they're steep and a bit narrow in parts. There's a stairgate at the top if you need it. If you have trouble with stairs, this might not be the best place for you.

You can park a car in the gated courtyard out the front. That's a bonus in Lyme Regis where parking can be difficult.

You're right in the town here. Shops, pubs, and restaurants are literally a few doors away. The beach and the harbour are a short walk downhill. The famous Cobb is there for a stroll. Fossil hunting on the beaches is the main activity for kids, or anyone really.

For longer trips, the whole Jurassic Coast is on your doorstep. You can walk west towards Golden Cap or east to places like West Bay. Charmouth is just along the coast for more fossils. For organised days out, the National Trust in Dorset has lots of nearby places, and the Jurassic Coast Trust site is useful for planning.

Things to know: Bedding and towels are included. We have a cot and a highchair. No pets, I'm afraid. It's available over Christmas too.
