Wheelwright's Cottage

Wheelwright's Cottage is in Rodsley, which is a hamlet near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. It's a detached stone cottage that sleeps six, with three bedrooms and one bathroom downstairs. It's got a 4 Star rating. We think that's about right. It's comfortable and well-equipped, but it's still a cottage in the countryside.

The garden is enclosed, which is good if you're bringing dogs. You can see a pony paddock from there. We've left a gas BBQ on the decking if you want to use it.

Inside, the layout is straightforward. The kitchen has what you need, including a dishwasher and washing machine. There's a dining table and a sitting room with a TV that has Sky. The stairs are typical cottage stairs. Not tiny, but watch your head on the way up.

Ashbourne is about four miles away. It's a proper market town with shops, supermarkets, and places to eat. We often go there for bits and pieces.

For walking, you're right on the edge of the Peak District. The Tissington Trail and Dovedale are both close by. You can get straight onto some public footpaths from the cottage. There's a nice walk through Shirley Woods to Osmaston, and you can get a drink at the pub there. If you're cycling, route 68 goes past the gate.

A few other things nearby: there's fishing at Longford Lakes, and Ashbourne Golf Club is five minutes away. For a day out, Alton Towers is about a 25-minute drive. Chatsworth House is roughly half an hour.

You can bring up to two dogs. Bedding and towels are included. We've put a cot, highchair, and stairgate in there if you need them. There's parking for two cars on the gravel drive.
