The Cottage Highfield is in Rothbury, up in Northumberland. It's a proper old stone cottage from the 1850s, one of the first houses built here. The ceilings are high and the windows are tall, so it feels light even on a grey day.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms upstairs, both a good size. There's a bathroom with a walk-in shower downstairs, and a separate toilet upstairs. The stairs are wide, not steep like some places.
Downstairs is open plan. Living room with a dining area and a gas stove. The kitchen is through an archway. It's modern and has everything, including a dishwasher. It's a 4 Star place, which means it's comfortable and well kept.
You can bring up to two dogs. There's on-site parking for one car.
You're up the hill a bit in the town. It's a five minute walk down to the main street. There are a few pubs, most do food, and a couple of restaurants and cafes. The Sandstone Way cycle route goes right past the door.
You can walk straight out onto the Simonside Hills from the cottage. For a shorter stroll, Cragside is less than a mile away. It's a National Trust house with massive gardens and lakes. Well worth a visit.
Alnwick with its castle is about half an hour's drive. The coast, like Alnmouth or Craster, is about 40 minutes. For Hadrian's Wall, you're looking at maybe 50 minutes to an hour depending on which bit you go to. Kielder for the dark skies is just over half an hour.
Facilities: it's got wifi, a TV, a washing machine, and a cot if you need one. All bedding and towels are included.
