Ellerside

Ellerside is near Holker in Cumbria. It's a detached house up a long drive with electric gates.

It sleeps eight people in four bedrooms. Three have king-size beds. There are two bathrooms. The rating is five star, which means it's well looked after and has everything. The stairs are normal.

The house is quite big. There's a farmhouse kitchen, a separate dining room, and two living rooms. One has a wood burner, the other has a gas fire and Sky TV. There's also a shower room downstairs. The garden is landscaped with a patio. You can't see another house from it, it backs onto private woodland. There's a useful double garage you can put bikes or kayaks in.

You're two miles from the village of Cark. It's got two pubs, a bakery, a shop, and a garden centre. The coastal train line stops there. You can get the train to Grange-over-Sands, which is a nice old seaside town.

Cartmel, which is famous for its sticky toffee pudding and the racecourse, is four miles away. Holker Hall is just down the road from us, you can walk the grounds and visit the house. The Cistercian Way walking route goes through Cark.

For a day trip, the southern Lake District is about a half hour drive. You can get to the start of the Haverthwaite Steam Railway in ten minutes, which connects to the Windermere steamers. Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere are within half an hour.

In terms of facilities, it has pretty much what you'd expect: a washing machine, dishwasher, washing line, BBQ, WiFi, and parking. Bedding and towels are included. There's a cot and highchair. No pets allowed.

If you're planning walks or visits, these are useful: Lake District National Park and National Trust North West. For local heritage, there's English Heritage.
