Barnard Castle is set amongst some of the most magnificent countryside that the county has to offer and is perfect for walkers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts, there are many public footpaths, established walks and cycle paths that lead through the town, alongside the River Tees and out into rolling countryside and beyond. In the heart of town, you will find a fantastic assortment of independent shops, galleries, antiques and a high standard of coffee shops, pubs and restaurants. There is also a weekly farmers market that provides local produce, arts, crafts, food and drink. It is also home to the magnificent Bowes Museum and the ruins of its castle. The castle overlooks the River Tees and offers magnificent views over the surrounding areas. The Teesdale Way and The Witham Theatre are minutes’ walk from the doorstop.
A little further afield but still within only a few miles distance, guests will find the pretty picture-postcard village of Staindrop, which is set in a dedicated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is definitely worth the short trip out to visit. Other sites of interest include Raby Castle and Deer Park and Egglestone Abbey. High Force waterfall is within easy reach as are Tan Hill, Hamsterley Forest and the market town of Richmond. A little further afield places of interest include the cathedral city of Durham, Yorkshire Dales or even the stunning Lake District.
